World Whiskies Awards Announce The Best 2019 American Whiskeys

The World Whiskies Awards are “the global awards selecting the very best in all the international recognised styles, award and promote the world’s best whiskies to consumers and trade across the globe,” according to their website.

Contestants are self selected in that they must enter to win. Distillers, distilleries, and marketing departments first choose their category before paying an entry fee (between $250 and $410), submitting their bottles by October 12th, 2018, and crossing their fingers. In the American Whiskeys Awards, First Round judging took place in November of 2018 at Jack Rose Dining Saloon, Washington DC, and was chaired by Steve Beal. Awards for American whiskeys were presented in New York in January.

Taste categories include:

  • Blended, A blend of both malt and grain whiskies from different distilleries– 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement, and Blended Limited Release– (A blend of both malt and grain whiskies from different distilleries but limited to 2500 bottles- 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement)
  • Blended Malt, A blend of single malts from different distilleries. 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement
  • Bourbon– Kentucky, Non Kentucky
  • Canadian Blended, Canadian whisky is a blend of mature whiskies, each usually distilled from a single grain type. Generally, some of this spirit is distilled to high abv and matured in used barrels to maximize flavours that develop from long exposure to air in the barrel. Other spirit, distilled to low abv in short columns or pot stills is matured in new or once-used barrels to emphasize the flavours derived from the grain, fermentation and wood. Canadian whisky must be aged for at least three years- 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement
  • Flavoured Whisky, Whisky with an added flavour to it ( such as honey, cinnamon or apple for instance). This might not be 40% but should have a whisky spirit base- Age Statement
  • Grain, Made from any grain other than malted barley including wheat, maize (corn) and rye- 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement
  • New Make, New make should be straight from the still nothing added and not been matured
  • Pot Still, A whisky made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley and from a single distillery– 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement
  • Rye, Must be distilled from a mashbill of at least 51 per cent rye, can be referred to as straight is matured for at least two years in a virgin oak cask– 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement
  • Single Cask Single Malt, A whisky distilled using 100% malted barley and originating from a sole cask (normally about 180 or so bottles)- 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement
  • Single Malt, Whisky distilled at a single distillery use 100% malted barley, yeast and water- 12 Years & Under, 13 to 20 Years, 21 Years & Over, No Age Statement
  • Tennessee– Age Statement, No Age Statement
  • Wheat
